DHI Hair Transplant vs FUE hair transplant

Innovation in Hair Transplantation: DHI Technique

A Brief History: From FUT to FUE

Since its advent in 2002, the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique has revolutionized the hair transplantation industry, eclipsing the older Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method. While FUT involved removing a strip of hairy tissue from the nape and then slicing it into smaller units, FUE allows for the individual extraction of hair follicles. This progression led to more natural-looking results and increased patient demand for hair transplants.

Limitations of Current Techniques

Although FUE replaced FUT as the gold standard, the technique has seen minimal innovation over the past 15 years. Being highly skill-intensive, it has faced challenges in countries like the USA, which are relatively new to the practice. Robotics has been introduced to overcome these limitations, but it remains expensive and less effective compared to manual transplantation.

Introducing the DHI Technique

The most notable advancement in recent years is the Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) technique. Also known as the pen technique, DHI utilizes a special pen to implant each follicle directly into the scalp. This contrasts with the traditional FUE method, where horizontal slits are manually created in the bald area, and the follicles are inserted afterward. This two-step process in FUE can sometimes damage the follicles, leading to less successful outcomes.

Advantages of DHI Over Traditional Methods

The benefits of the DHI technique are manifold:

  • Natural Angles: The method allows for greater precision in setting the angle of the implanted hair, leading to more natural-looking results.

  • Preservation of Existing Hair: DHI avoids damage to any existing hairs during the transplantation process.

  • Higher Density: The technique enables the implantation of more hairs, resulting in a denser, fuller look.

  • Quicker Healing: The small incisions made during DHI allow for quicker and more comfortable healing.

  • No Shaving Required: Most significantly, the DHI technique eliminates the need for shaving the recipient area prior to transplantation.

Overall, the DHI technique offers an innovative and effective approach to hair transplantation. With its numerous advantages, including the preservation of existing hair and faster healing times, it is setting a new standard in the field of hair restoration.
